Overview

The Evolution Robotics ERSP Scorpion robot is designed to accelerate application development with ERSP 3.1. The Scorpion comes fully configured and ready for immediate use with your laptop computer. The robot is equipped with the essential video camera, IR sensors, bump sensor, servo drive motors, robot control module, power system, and i/o to get you started developing advanced robotic applications right away.

Video Camera & Microphone

The Scorpion comes equipped with a wide angle video camera that has been computer calibrated using our advanced calibration algorithm to correct for lens imperfections. The camera mount allows smooth and easy adjustment of the tilt angle with a high degree of precision. The camera subsystem includes:
  • Logitech QuickCam Pro 3000 (640 X 480 video; 1.3 MP still mode)
  • Wide angle lens and custom lens mount
  • Adjustable camera tilt mount (5 deg below horizontal to 25 deg above)
  • Camera calibration data file
  • Built-in microphone for sound/voice recognition applications
  • USB Interface

IR Sensors

The Scorpion comes equipped with both digital and continuously responsive analog IR range finding sensors. The sensors are mounted in protective housings and placed for effective obstacle detection as follows:
  • 4 ledge detection sensors
  • 3 up-facing sensors
  • 13 horizontal facing sensors
  • There are 13 Sharp GP2D12 medium range analog IR sensors
    • Narrow beam and medium range for obstacle distance measurement
    • 10cm - 80cm distance range
    • Interfaces with Robot Control Module
  • There are 7 Sharp GP2D15 short range digital IR sensors
    • Narrow beam and short range for stair/ledge and overhang detection
    • 1cm - 24cm trigger distance
    • Interfaces with Robot Control Module

Bump Sensor

The Scorpion comes equipped with a wide face front bumper to detect collisions. The bumper features include:
  • Low activation force, wide face design
  • Independent left and right digital contact triggers

Robot Control Module

The Scorpion comes equipped with the Evolution Robotics. powerful Robot Control Module to provide motion control, auxiliary digital and analog i/o capabilities, sensor i/o, and motor options:
  • Low-level, user tunable obstacle avoidance routines programmed into the firmware
  • USB interface with option for serial interface
  • 3 auxiliary digital inputs or outputs
  • 2 auxiliary single-ended analog inputs
  • Up to 15 single-ended analog inputs and 10 digital i/o when Sharp IR Sensors are not used
  • 2-Axis servo motor control with encoder inputs
    • 3 Amps continuous for each motor phase, 6 Amp peak
    • operational up to 36 volts
  • Battery charge metering

    and a laptop/PC with
  • 800MHz Pentium III or higher (2GHz required for Navigation functionality)
  • 700MB of hard disk space
  • 256MB RAM required, 512MB RAM (recommended for Windows)
  • 2 USB Ports (USB 1.1 or 2.0)
  • Wireless network adapter, such as 802.11a,b or g (recommended)
  • Full-duplex sound card (recommended)
  • Prototyping, integration, and testing can be done with the Evolution Robotics Scorpion Application Development Robot (sold separately). Developers can also use custom hardware as needed, though additional drivers may be necessary.
