Autonomous navigation is the ability to move around freely in an environment with the knowledge of where you are, other places you might want to go, and paths you can take to get there safely. This core capability is needed by emerging products such as robots or other mobile devices, to meet the demands and expectations of customers looking for truly independent, intelligent products.

Localization, arguably the most difficult task of a navigation system, is the process of a robot or mobile device determining its own position with respect to its environment. An intelligent localization system brings a number of important benefits to a product. Some of these include:
- Moving to a specific location such as a charging station, or following a prescribed route for patrolling
- Creating systematic floor coverage patterns ideal for today's up and coming independent vacuums
- Optimizing movement resulting in saved battery or time required to achieve a goal like getting to a specific location
