GBW & PMC

NameJerry & Pat
ER1 Community Name: GBW and PMC are friends and business partners and have been working together on their ER1s.
Location Santa Fe, New Mexico & Norco, California
Occupations"We're basically entrepreneurs."Jerry and Pat have worked together for many years, either at exiting companies or companies they started on their own. They have always been in the technology field. Their current venture is Coggins Wilcox LLC which offers technical services for contract hire. Also coming soon is their own robot-focused website www.robots4all.com. They plan to build a company around robotics, offering robotics development services for both hardware and software, as well as possibly specialized robot applications that run on Evolution Robotics robots and software platform."We already have an industrial robot that moves at 3.5 mph and can carry up to 1200 lbs. of payload. We're evaluating the ER1 software to add on to it."
What product do you own? "We each have our own ER1 and we're using the Command Line Interface for many of the projects we're working on. We're waiting to purchase the IR sensor accessory.”
What have you done with your ER1 so far? "Lots of things. We've created:
- A Visual Basic interface for remote controlling the ER1. We've already made this available in the community. You can log onto our robot and drive it around and run text based script files from any networked computer.
- A real- time data interface for weather forecasting and news reporting.
- A multi- platform micro web server that is 60kb that allows full remote control of the ER1 including streaming video. We had roughly 5000 commands run through the internet when fellow forum members drove the ER1 around Pat's garage.
- We also gave a demonstration to some of the folks at Evolution allowing remote control over the telephone using our VoiceXML application.
- A very funny Halloween application. I put a doll's head on my ER1 and had it wander around the house on Halloween asking friends, 'Please, can you help me find my body?'
- A number of objects that were added to the ER1 so it could recognize a specific prescription bottle and tell the user what the recommended dosage is." Jerry and Pat are nearly finished with a wireless X10 application that enables the ER1 to control appliances around the house, and a wireless 2-way voice package so you can talk directly to the ER1 from up to 5 miles away and it will respond.
Favorite aspect of the ER1? For Jerry it's the whole concept of behaviors - that you can use simple if-then statements to create really powerful robot functionality.

For Pat it's the ability to develop robot applications that can become stand alone robot functions that you can share, or sell, to others. "It really means the robot and the platform are expandable. We'll be able to create add-ons and plug-ins for our robots."

Favorite robot of legend? They both like Hal of "2001 Space Odyssey" and "Robot from Lost In Space".
Next big project for the ER1? Selling robot applications! "We believe there's demand to use a robot for security and patrolling when you're not home."
